This digital DJ promo for Jazzanova’s new single “I Human” features a mesmerizing vocal delivery by Detroit singer/musician, Paul Randolph. Randolph has been a regular member of the Jazzanova live band, touring with them over the last few years. In his words, “I Human” is a statement of the feeling you have when you create music and interact with people in a one-on-one and personal live situation, instead of ambivalent text messages and e-mails. The package also features an edit by Alex Barck of Jazzanova. A 12″ vinyl and a digital release of the single will precede Jazzanova’s upcoming new album Funkhaus Studio Sessions (due in May 2012) and the tour of the same name. Watch the video for “I Human” ft. Gregory Porter, whose 2010 Motema Music debut, Water, was nominated in the 2011 53rd Annual Grammy Awards as Best Jazz Vocal Album, drops a powerful cinematic treatment of one of the CD’s most popular tracks, “1960 What?.” This digital DJ promo features an international array of producers who have contributed to three remixes of the song. Swedish production wizard Opolopo’s soulful House remix, a “kick and bass rerub,” is already burning up dance floors from Chicago to the UK, where it’s currently getting airplay on Jazz FM. Peter McEvilley, the LA-based producer and electronic music artist who works as Peas, has contributed a House mix, and the founder of Amsterdam’s Wicked Jazz Sounds music collective, Phil Horneman, has contributed a Wicked Jazz Sounds radio edit, which clocks in at about half as long as the anthemic twelve-and-a-half minute long original version. The official videos for “Illusion” and “1960 What?” have a combined total of 40,000 YouTube views and will be aired on VH1. Watch the official video for “1960 What?” (Original).

DJ PROMO: Jyoti – Ocotea DJ Sampler

June 7th, 2010

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Esteemed record label SomeOthaShip Connect is set to deliver Ocotea, the first album and instrumental jazz release under singer/songwriter/producer Georgia Anne Muldrow’s new alias Jyoti. Drawing from an ocean of influences such as Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys, Swamini Truiyasangitanada’s Monastic Trio, Charlie Mingus, Eric Dolphy, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Henry Threadgill, Sun Ra, and Stevie Wonder (to name a few), Ocotea is a new frontier for Georgia Anne Muldrow’s sonic discoveries. She is appearing as Jyoti (meaning light or flame in Sanskrit) in all of her “jazz” recordings to come, paying homage to the great and masterful ancestor Alice Coltrane, who gifted her with this name shortly before she ascended into an even higher consciousness. Infused with experimental synthesizers that posses a pan-tonal sensibility, and melodies that soar about with raw musicianship – Ocotea is not one to miss. Request a copy of the limited edition vinyl.

April 22nd, 2010
album

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Kahuun’s Drunken Sailor EP [Bagpak Music] kicks off with the title track, where Kahuun’s signature dancefloor jazz-swing-break vibe comes complete with scattered drums, buzzin’ bassline and the sultry vocals of Sofia Rubina. “Carbon Aid” is a funk-fuelled midtempo number with an uplifting rhythm – watch out for the jazz-inflected break in the 2nd half of the choon. The EP takes a turn with the Pandemix Dub version of “Carbon Aid” with its massive, dark bassline that resolves into a nicely crafted 4-on-the-floor tune. And Kahuun wraps it up with “Flying Pigs,” an uplifting house number with a catchy riff, heavy drums and thick bassline.

DJ PROMO: Barrio Jazz Gang Feat. Eddie Henderson – 2 Album Sampler

February 5th, 2010

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

In 2002, Barrio Jazz Gang released its first CD Spectrum, venturing into Nu Jazz territory with an electronic flair. Their new project 2 is a work born from the union of producer/composer Roby Colella (founder of Funky Juice Records) and co-producer/composer and guitarist Steve Micarelli. This digital DJ promo includes “Jumpclub,” the most representative track and natural successor to the popular “Chok-A-Blok Avenue.” It evolves thematically and rhythmically, creating a truly fresh concept of jazz, danceable yet hypnotically fascinating. “Five Apple-Maples” is a tribute to the Paul Desmond jazz classic “Take Five” but projected into the Third Millenium with a tasty 5/4 electronic loop. “Sunday Show (Remix)” closes the album with the mainstream Nu Jazz is in full effect. Elvin Jones-style cymbal work and a four on the floor bass drum beat support veteran trumpet jazzer Eddie Henderson’s flights of fantasy. The Benson-flavored guitar and repetitive, mantra-like vocal phrasing seals the deal on this groovin’ track.

DJ PROMO: Salvador Santana – “Keyboard City” Remix EP with Remixes by Mathieu Schreyer, Dan Deacon, and The Hood Internet feat. GZA

January 4th, 2010

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Salvador Santana, the 26-year-old keyboardist, vocalist, composer, and songwriter makes a splash with his single "Keyboard City." Cut with Beastie Boys collaborator Money Mark, the original track layers reedy, synth atmospherics, icy-cool electronic keys and a smooth-as-butter beat underneath Sal’s awesomely zonked-out vocoder-heavy vocals. This digital DJ promo packs not only The Hood Internet remix featuring GZA, but also the Dan Deacon remix of the Hood Internet remix – done, of course, in Dan’s inimitable synthed-out style. Topping it all off is Mathieu Schreyer’s electro-booty breaks remix. Chocked full of rock, funk, R&B and traditional Latin rhythms, Salvador’s album Keyboard City drops early next year.
