In 2002, Barrio Jazz Gang released its first CD Spectrum, venturing into Nu Jazz territory with an electronic flair. Their new project 2 is a work born from the union of producer/composer Roby Colella (founder of Funky Juice Records) and co-producer/composer and guitarist Steve Micarelli. This digital DJ promo includes “Jumpclub,” the most representative track and natural successor to the popular “Chok-A-Blok Avenue.” It evolves thematically and rhythmically, creating a truly fresh concept of jazz, danceable yet hypnotically fascinating. “Five Apple-Maples” is a tribute to the Paul Desmond jazz classic “Take Five” but projected into the Third Millenium with a tasty 5/4 electronic loop. “Sunday Show (Remix)” closes the album with the mainstream Nu Jazz is in full effect. Elvin Jones-style cymbal work and a four on the floor bass drum beat support veteran trumpet jazzer Eddie Henderson’s flights of fantasy. The Benson-flavored guitar and repetitive, mantra-like vocal phrasing seals the deal on this groovin’ track.

Salvador Santana, the 26-year-old keyboardist, vocalist, composer, and songwriter makes a splash with his single "Keyboard City." Cut with Beastie Boys collaborator Money Mark, the original track layers reedy, synth atmospherics, icy-cool electronic keys and a smooth-as-butter beat underneath Sal’s awesomely zonked-out vocoder-heavy vocals. This digital DJ promo packs not only The Hood Internet remix featuring GZA, but also the Dan Deacon remix of the Hood Internet remix - done, of course, in Dan’s inimitable synthed-out style. Topping it all off is Mathieu Schreyer’s electro-booty breaks remix. Chocked full of rock, funk, R&B and traditional Latin rhythms, Salvador’s album Keyboard City drops early next year.

Embracing the cyclical nature of music, Los Angeles-based producers Presto and Avatar of Wayward Saints have created a remarkable debut album, Future Vintage. Fusing hip hop, jazz, soul, funk and down-tempo for a unique sound that explores each genre without sounding chaotic or heavy-handed, Future Vintage has the breakbeat sensibility that can knock from the speakers of dance clubs, while conveying the laid-back, urban soul often found in coffeeshops and hipster hangouts. In this digital DJ promo, Noel Zancanella and GIT Beats remix the cosmic elements in “Dream Merchant.” Khurse brandishes his own take on the brooding “Ghost Town,” and collaborator DJ Rylo (Sebadukes) imbues his dexterity on “Cruisin.”

Singer and true multicultural woman, Somi records her third full-length If The Rains Come First, a stunning collection of self-penned story-based songs. Optimism, conviction and resilience are hallmarks of Somi’s new creations of survival and awareness. In this digital DJ promo, “Prayer To The Saint Of The Brokenhearted” reflects on the helplessness and hopelessness one often feels after heartache, while serving as a reminder of faith and renewal. Featuring the legendary Hugh Masekela on trumpet, “Enganjyani” (’most beloved’ in Rutooro, the language spoken by Somi’s Ugandan mother) refers to, “the memory of whispered prayer and being haunted by a past lover.” “Rising” is a song about faith and navigating life’s challenges, filled with a flawless juxtaposition of sizzling rhythm, instantly memorable melody and a vocal style that JazzTimes magazine describes as, “the earthy gutsiness of Nina Simone blended with the vocal beauty of Dianne Reeves.”
