Without a doubt one of the most important voices in 20th century music, proto-rap pioneer and – offensively but not inaccurately – the black Bob Dylan, Gil Scott-Heron steps into the next decade with his first album in thirteen years, I’m New Here. This digital DJ promo features the first single “Me And The Devil” and the blues hollering “New York Is Killing Me.” Recorded in New York over the past eighteen months, I’m New Here reveals the huge, banged-up heart that shows the only genuine motivation any activist or artist should have, a bone-deep, unsentimental love for humanity.

Gil Scott-Heron has clearly been haunted by his demons and “Me and the Devil” a testament of his darker side. Reminds me of Massive Attack, in fact it’s too bad he’s never collaborated with them.
